The Difference Between Body Butter, Body Cream and Body Lotion
You’re just dying to know the difference between the three moisturizers, right? Ok so maybe not dying but I do get asked a lot about the differences so here is the rundown.
I like to think of our moisturizers like Goldilocks and the 3 bears. Butter is the thickest, lotion is the thinnest and cream is just right in the middle. Now that is just my opinion, I think all 3 are wonderful, but for my skin the cream is top notch.
Let’s start with Lavender Body Butter. Yes, it is by far the thickest of the three and for good reason. There is NO water in the ingredient list which means there is also no preservative needed. It is ideal for deeply hydrating dry, rough, or chapped skin. A good option to lock in moisture after a shower or an overnight treatment. Now the downfall to body butter is it is a little greasy without the water to quickly absorb and it can melt in hot summer temperatures.
Next up is the Body Lotion, the most lightweight of the three and absorbs the fastest. Lavender body lotion is light, liquid-based moisturizer that is designed to help moisturize, soften and soothe the skin while also providing a relaxing and calming scent.
And finally, we have Body Cream. Found in the middle it is thicker than the lotion but still absorbs fairly quickly compared to the butter. Body cream is made by emulsifying water and oils together and it provides long-lasting hydration.
Step by Step Application of all Three
Image 1 shows the Body Cream on top, Body Butter on right and Lotion on the bottom. The next images show the progression of rubbing in the moisturizers. As you can see the lotion quickly absorbs while the other 2 do not. The cream will be the next to absorb and the body butter last.
Why is a Preservative Needed?
When water is added to cosmetics a preservative must also be added otherwise it will spoil very quickly and no one wants mold growing in their containers! For this reason, it is important not to let water inside the body butter containers. Just make sure hands are nice and dry before applying.
Which One Should I Buy?
Your favorite moisturizer will depend on your skin type and how you plan to use it. If you are looking for a deep treatment for dry skin, then body butter applied at night with a sock or glove over top is ideal. However, if you just want a nice lavender scented lotion to apply throughout the day then the Lotion is perfect. For me I like to apply the Body Cream once a day and just love the slight thickness to it. It feels so luxurious.
